Esoteric

Autumn is here, so it’s a seasonally appropriate time to be getting as many killer new metal albums as we have been lately. September was stacked, and this first week of October is already no different. I wrote about the new Boris and Gatecreeper albums over in Notable Releases, and you can also read about the new Exhumed, Toxic Holocaust, Insomnium, Dysrhythmia, and more over at Invisible Oranges’ Upcoming Metal Releases. This week also brought new singles from Black Sabbath’s Bill Ward, Esoteric, Cattle Decapitation, Isis/Sumac’s Aaron Turner, Opeth, Sunn O))), Vastum, Rosetta, and more. Read on for all the metal we posted on BV this week…

BILL WARD BAND – “ARROWS”

Former Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward has shared a new song, “Arrows,” which is a tribute to the victims of the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Music Festival shooting in Las Vegas. It’s a touching song, and musically, it sounds more like Bowie or Pink Floyd than the band Bill Ward is most famous for. “It’s just a way of saying we’re very sorry that all those things happened and that we honour those who are not with us today,” he said. “It’s a very solemn gesture, but at the same time, I’ve written a song that I hope can bring some solace and some good things to those who are still working through that particular shooting and those particular issues that they encountered because of the shooting.”

CATTLE DECAPITATION – “BRING BACK THE PLAGUE”

Cattle Decapitation have shared a second single off their upcoming album Death Atlas (due November 29th via Metal Blade), “Bring Back the Plague.” As you’d probably expect from this band, it seamlessly hops between genres, hitting evil black and death metal and melodic alt-metal, and sounding great throughout all of it.

VASTUM – “I ON THE KNIFE (SECOND WOUND)”

Oakland death metallers Vastum have unleashed another single off their upcoming album Orificial Purge (due 10/25 via 20 Buck Spin). Vocalist Daniel Butler says “I On The Knife” “is about psychophysical self-mutilation under the command of a thing, an it, which is gradually symbolized as an object (e.g. father, knife) that in turn reveals the self as a wound. Basically, it’s about how you’re a wound and nothing else.”

ROSETTA – “TERRA SOLA”

Philly post-metallers Rosetta are back with a new three-song EP, Terra Sola. The 11+ minute title track is the kind of sweeping post-metal that Rosetta have always done so well, and the EP also comes with two more experimental tracks. Read more about it here.

LIFE OF AGONY – “BLACK HEART”

Life Of Agony have debuted another song and video off their upcoming album The Sound of Scars, which is a concept album that continues the story of their classic 1993 debut River Runs Red. LIGHTNING BOLT – “HUSKER DON’T”

Lightning Bolt have shared “Husker Don’t” off their anticipated new album Sonic Citadel, and in addition to being one of the most amazingly-titled songs on the album, it’s also one of the catchiest songs released so far. It’s a noise-punk ripper and has more of an underlying pop song than you usually expect from this band.

FOUGHT UPON EARTH – GRAVE MISCALCULATION (ALBUM STREAM)

Instrumental metal duo Fought Upon Earth include former members of Acid King, Secrets Of The Sky, and Scorched-Earth Policy, and their new album Grave Miscalculation is a total onslaught of proggy, fuzzed-out, stoner rock riffage.
